Bashō (1644–1694)Japanese poet. He was a master of the haiku, a 17-syllable poetic form with lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, which he infused with subtle allusiveness. His Oku-no-hosomichi/The Narrow Road to the Deep North (1694), an account of a visit to northern and western Honshū, consists of haiku interspersed with prose passages.
