basic rock

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

basic rock

Igneous rock with relatively low silica contents of 45–52% by weight, such as gabbro and basalt. Along with the terms acid rock and ultrabasic rock it is part of an outdated classification system based on the erroneous belief that silicon in rocks is in the form of silicic acid. Geologists today are more likely to use the descriptive term mafic rock or report the amount of SiO2 in percentage by weight.
