Long-bodied scaly sea fish Morone labrax found in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. They grow to 1 m/3 ft, and are often seen in shoals.

The approximate range of a bass voice.

Lowest male voice, of approximate range C2–D4. It is also used before the name of an instrument and indicates that the instrument sounds in approximately the same range.

Well-known bass singers include the Russian Fyodor Chaliapin and the Bulgarian Boris Christoff. The term also covers the bass instrument of a consort or family, for example the bass clarinet, bass tuba, and bassoon, which all have a similar range. An instrument an octave lower than bass is a contrabass.
