Cowpens

Town in Spartanburg County, northwestern South Carolina, USA, in the Piedmont, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Spartanburg; population (1990) 2,200. It is a trade centre.

About 13 km/8 mi north-northwest of the town centre is 342 ha/845 ac Cowpens National Battlefield, scene of a decisive victory by American militiamen under Daniel Morgan over British troops commanded by Banastre Tarleton (17 January 1781).
