beam weapon

Weapon capable of destroying a target by means of a high-energy beam of radiation or particles. Beam weapons similar to the ‘death ray’ of science fiction have been explored, most notably during Ronald Reagan's presidential term in the 1980s in the USA.

The high-energy laser (HEL) produces a beam of high accuracy that burns through the surface of its target. The charged particle beam uses either electrons or protons, which have been accelerated almost to the speed of light, to slice through its target.
