In archaeology, a small fortified enclosure. These circular defences have walls up to 5 m/16 ft thick and easily protected doorways. Like Scottish brochs (stone towers), they may incorporate chambers in the thickness of the walls. They are located in western Scotland and may date from the Iron Age.
