BE

First British military aircraft, developed 1911–12 by Geoffrey de Havilland and F M Green at the Royal Aircraft Factory, Farnborough. As the improved BE 2, it was widely used during World War I as a reliable reconnaissance and bombing aircraft.

As more advanced fighters were developed its lack of manoeuvrability proved a serious handicap and it was gradually relegated to training roles.
