Stein (lived 18th–19th centuries)

German family of piano makers: Johann Andreas (1728–1792), organ builder and piano maker. He learnt his craft from his father, Johann Georg Stein (1697–1754), worked with Johann Andreas Silbermann in Strasbourg, and settled in Augsburg in 1751. Mozart preferred his pianos above all others. Maria Anna (Nanette) (1769–1833), pianist and piano maker, daughter of Johann. She played to Mozart as a child during his visit to Augsburg in 1777, and on her father's death in 1792 carried on the business with her brother, Matthäus, but married Andreas Streicher in 1794 and moved with him to Vienna, where they established a new firm jointly with Matthäus. Later she and her husband became friends of Beethoven. Matthäus Andreas (1776–1842), piano maker, son of Johann. He accompanied his sister and her husband to Vienna in 1793 and joined their firm, but established himself independently in 1802. Andreas Friedrich (1784–1809), pianist and composer, son of Johann. He went to Vienna as a child with his sister and brother, and studied piano playing and also composition with Albrechtsberger. He appeared in public frequently, especially with Mozart's concertos. His works include three operettas; pantomime Die Fee Radiante; violin concerto; piano trio; piano sonata; songs. Karl Andreas (1797–1863), composer and piano maker, son of Matthäus. He was a pupil of Förster. He first devoted himself to composition, but later mainly to his father's factory, to which he succeeded. He wrote a comic opera Die goldene Gans, two overtures, and two piano concertos.
