beetfly

Small grey fly with black hairs. Its maggots feed on beet leaves. As soon as the maggots hatch they begin to feed, continuing for one month, when they turn into chestnut-brown pupae. The flies emerge a fortnight later.

Classification

The beet fly Anthomyia betae is in the family Anthomyiidae, order Diptera, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.
