Bend

City and administrative headquarters of Deschutes County in central Oregon, 142 km/88 mi east of Eugene, on the Deschutes River, in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains; population (2000) 52,000. Lumbering and tourism are central to its economy.

It was originally named Farewell Bend by pioneers who forded the river here. The city is the gateway to the Mount Bachelor ski resort, to the west, and headquarters of the Deschutes National Forest. Central Oregon Community College is here. Newberry Crater is to the south.
