bentonite| Soft porous rock consisting mainly of clay minerals, such as montmorillonite, and resembling fuller's earth, which swells when wet. It is formed by the chemical alteration of glassy volcanic material, such as tuff. Bentonite is used in papermaking, moulding sands, drilling muds for oil wells, and as a decolorant in food processing. |
