bentwood

Type of furniture, originally made by steam-heating and then bending rods of wood to form panels. Initially a country style, it was patented in the early 19th century in the USA. Twentieth-century designers such as Marcel Breuer and Alvar Aalto have developed a different form by bending sheets of plywood.

Decor/physical changes: Very little change has occurred in the looks of La Frite other than minor cosmetic improvements, though in 1999 the original bentwood chairs were replaced by authentic cafe chairs imported from France.
Deacon works in a variety of materials--his recent show included dimpled, cumulus-shaped reliefs in stainless steel and a tabletop display of found objects--but he is best known for his use of the bentwood technique developed in the nineteenth century by the furniture designer Michael Thonet, in which timber is steamed to become fleetingly malleable.
There are ideas for structures in books--Making Bentwood Trellises, Arbors, Gates and Fences by Jim Long, Green Wood for the Garden by Alan & Gill Bridgewater, and Sunflower Houses by Sharon Lovejoy to name a few.
