benzpyrene

One of a number of organic compounds associated with a particular polycyclic ring structure. Benzpyrenes are present in coal tar at low levels and are considered carcinogenic (cancer-inducing). Traces of benzpyrenes are present in wood smoke, and this has given rise to some concern about the safety of naturally smoked foods.
