fighting fishAny of a southeast Asian genus Betta of fishes of the gourami family, especially B. splendens, about 6 cm/2 in long and a popular aquarium fish. It can breathe air, using an accessory breathing organ above the gill, and can live in poorly oxygenated water. The male has large fins and various colours, including shining greens, reds, and blues. The female is yellowish brown with short fins. The male builds a nest of bubbles at the water's surface and displays to a female to induce her to lay. Rival males are attacked, and in a confined space fights may occur. In Thailand, public contests are held. How to thank TFD for its existence?
