biochemical oxygen demandAmount of dissolved oxygen taken up by micro-organisms in a sample of water. Since these micro-organisms live by decomposing organic matter, and the amount of oxygen used is proportional to their number and metabolic rate, BOD can be used as a measure of the extent to which the water is polluted with organic compounds. It is also used to lower refining energy, biochemical oxygen demand, and overall paper manufacturing costs. We evaluated the potential for the ground wood wastes to impact oxygen demand by measuring biochemical oxygen demand in the runoff: There was no difference in biochemical oxygen demand between the dimensional lumber control and the treatments containing engineered wood products, but all the mulch treatments had a higher average biochemical oxygen demand than the bare soil control. Thirty-eight percent of the measurements were highly acidic, and mean levels of biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids exceeded standards of the Ministry of Environment by 20- to 30-fold (Table 2). |
