The expedition integrated expertise in coastal geophysics, sediment geochemistry, dissolved and free methane fluxes through the water column and into the atmosphere, sediment and water column microbiology and biogeochemistry and detailed characterization of the sub-seafloor geology. Experts from a broad range of disciplines describe the various steps used to evaluate sedimentary processes, quantification of contaminants, biogeochemistry of metals and the tolerances of organisms exposed to estuarine pollution. The ecosystem has the "potential to be a modern analog to what geochemistry and biogeochemistry was like millions of years ago," said Jill Mikucki, the study's lead author. |
