Practical application of biological knowledge. Applied biology is directed towards the manipulation and control of living organisms and the environment in the light of biological knowledge, since many of the world's most urgent problems, such as overpopulation and disease, food production, environmental pollution, and waste disposal, are born of or fostered by biological ignorance. It covers a vast spectrum of subjects including forestry and fisheries, pest and weed control, pollution control, human and animal nutrition, microbiology, and immunology.
