biotic potential

The total theoretical reproductive capacity of an individual organism or species under ideal environmental conditions. The biotic potential of many small organisms such as bacteria, annual plants, and small mammals is very high but rarely reached, as other elements of the ecosystem such as predators and nutrient availability keep the population growth in check.
