It works like a regular birth control pill, preventing pregnancy by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary. Although it is contraindicated for women taking birth control, it is particularly helpful for those women coming off of the birth control pill and wanting to establish a regular cycle without the use of synthetic hormones. The development of the birth control pill in 1960, which allowed greater control over a woman's cycle of fertility, seemed to many Catholics to be a more refined and effective version of the rhythm method. |
