blastocyst

In mammals, the hollow ball of cells which is an early stage in the development of the embryo, roughly equivalent to the blastula of other animal groups.

Embryonic stem cells are derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, which are hollow balls of cells that form in early development.
This process eliminates the embryos that never develop into blastocysts in the Petri dish, since those are thought to have a much smaller chance of resulting in pregnancy.
Embryos become blastocysts, hollow balls of cells, after four to five days.
