bodybuilding

The development of a muscular body as a sport. Unlike other sports, in which training is a means to better performance at some other activity, in bodybuilding the aim is to look more impressive physically. Competitive bodybuilding developed in the 1920s, with Charles Atlas being the first bodybuilder to achieve international public acclaim. Competitors are marked on a variety of criteria, including posing and muscle definition.

More recent famous bodybuilders include Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno, who both had starring roles in films and television. Mr Olympia, sanctioned by the International Federation of BodyBuilders, is an annual competition generally regarded as the sport's most prestigious event.
