boletus

Any of several fleshy fungi (see fungus) with thick stems and caps of various colours. The European Boletus edulis is edible, but some species are poisonous. (Genus Boletus, class Basidiomycetes.)

Although still rare, more commonly found versions of boletus mushrooms are the Yellow Cracked Boletus (Boletus subtomentosus) and Red Cracked Boletus (Boletus chrysenteron), which are both edible, and the Purple Boletus (Boletus rhodoxanthus), which is toxic.
A few of my favorite, local, easy-to-identify, edible and delicious mushroom species include the wood hedge hog (Dentinum repandum), hen of the woods (Polypilus frondosus) often on old tree stumps and mature oak stands; sulphur shelf or chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) growing on stumps and trunks; Boletus pictus (under white pines); Suillus granulatus (usually under white pines); Boletus edulis (under conifers); and the coral mushrooms - Clavaria cinerea, under pines.
A molecule derived from the amino acid glutamine, theanine is typically found in tea (infusions of Camellia sinensis) and also in the basidiomycete mushroom Boletus badius.
