PINIn banking, a unique number used as a password to establish the identity of a customer using an automatic cash dispenser. The PIN is normally encoded into the magnetic strip of the customer's bank card and is known only to the customer and to the bank's computer. Before a cash dispenser will issue money or information, the customer must insert the card into a slot in the machine (so that the PIN can be read from the magnetic strip) and enter the PIN correctly at a keyboard. This helps to prevent stolen cards from being used to obtain money from cash dispensers. How to thank TFD for its existence? Working in front of mirrors recently in O'Reilly's class were students creating such characters as a mermaid hit by a speedboat, a victim of a plastic surgery gone wrong and a clown who was injured while juggling knives and a bowling pin. This year the top-flight architects won the Structural Ingenuity award for its entry: three, seven-foot tall bowling pins and a giant bowling ball all "canstructed" from more than 2,000 cans of food. For a bowling party when my son turned six, we designed tandem cakes: a bowling pin and a bowling ball. |
