bracketsPairs of signs that show which part of a calculation should be worked out first. For example, 4(7+3) indicates that 4 is to be multiplied by the result obtained from adding 7 and 3. The mnemonic BODMAS can help one to remember the order in which an arithmetical expression should be calculated. Brackets may be nested, for example, 4(20−(7+3)), in which case the expression 7+3 within the innermost pair of brackets is evaluated first, the result subtracted from 20 and that result multiplied by 4.
