brahmacari| In Hinduism, a young man leading a life of disciplined religious study. In student life, the boy lives austerely in the ashram (religious community) of his guru as a brahmacari, studying the Vedic literatures and begging for alms. In Hindu tradition the vow of brahmacari (celibacy) aids yogic practice and is sometimes maintained throughout life. |
