ground| In art, the prepared surface of the canvas or panel on which a painter works. It is usually white paint (over which a warm tone such as Indian red is sometimes laid) or plaster (see gesso). In etching, the ground is the wax coating of the metal plate through which the artist draws with the etching needle. |
