schnorkel

Device used by the Germans in World War II to permit submarines to draw air from and emit fumes to the surface while running diesel engines underwater.

Invented 1938 by a Dutch naval engineer and fitted to some Dutch submarines, the idea was adopted by the Germans 1942-43 to allow their submarines to run on diesels and charge batteries while remaining submerged, so as to avoid detection by radar.
