The 14 species of broadbills are found only in the forests of South and East Africa and parts of South East Asia. Broadbills feed mainly on fruit and small invertebrates such as insects. They build domed nests usually suspended over water from tree branches.

Primitive perching bird of the family Eurylaimidae, found in Africa and South Asia. Broadbills are forest birds and are often found near water. They are gregarious and noisy, have brilliant coloration and wide bills, and feed largely on insects.

This characteristic "finning" behavior has always made the swordfish an easy mark for harpoon fishermen and until about 1960, most commercially caught broadbills came to market as "stuck fish.
