maroon

In the West Indies and Suriname, a freed or escaped African slave. Maroons were organized and armed by the Spanish in Jamaica in the late 17th century and early 18th century. They harried the British with guerrilla tactics.

A peace treaty was signed in 1739 between the Maroons and the British, granting the Maroons land and exemption from taxes. In 1994 the Maroons applied but failed to have these land rights reasserted.
