Mutual attachment between persons, as distinguished from sexual or family affection. The Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle distinguished three levels of friendship: the useful (friendship as a common enterprise), the pleasant (friendship as entertaining companionship), and the good or virtuous (friendship as mutual esteem).

The first of its kind, Best Buddies is a national social and recreational program that assists people with intellectual disabilities in becoming a part of mainstream society by instilling one-on-one friendships with non-disabled individuals.
The convenience sample comprised 39 buddies who completed the buddy training programme, 39 patients assigned to the 39 buddies and 38 controls who lived in areas where the buddy programme did not operate.
