1756UKEnglish engineer John Smeaton begins to rebuild the Eddystone Lighthouse, near Plymouth, England.
1 May18 September 1851UKThe Great Exhibition is held in Hyde Park, London, England. Devised by Prince Albert, it is the first exhibition to display the latest technical innovations in industry, from both Britain and Europe. Exhibits are housed in the Crystal Palace, a large iron and glass structure, designed by English architect Joseph Paxton.
1883USAUS architect William Lebaron Jenney completes construction of the ten-storey Home Insurance Building in Chicago, Illinois. The world's first true skyscraper, it consists of a steel-girder framework on which the outer covering of masonry hangs. It sparks a boom in the construction of skyscrapers in Chicago.

A second care, and nearly related to the first, is to have an eye both to the public and private edifices in the city, that they may be an ornament; and also to take care of all buildings which are likely to fall: and to see that the highways are kept in proper repair; and also that the landmarks between different estates are preserved, that there may be no disputes on that account; and all other business of the same nature.
Upon closer observation I saw as we passed them that the buildings were deserted, and while not greatly decayed had the appearance of not having been tenanted for years, possibly for ages.
I saw huge buildings rise up faint and fair, and pass like dreams.
