Although the yellow-flowered bulbous buttercup Ranunculus bulbosus adequately fits the general description of ‘buttercup’, members of the genus Ranunculus with both white and red flowers may also be described as buttercups.

Any plant of the buttercup family with divided leaves and yellow flowers. (Genus Ranunculus, family Ranunculaceae.)

Species include the swamp buttercup (Ranunculus septentrionaiis) of the US.
