The Dominican monastery – built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians in the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385 – represents the founding of Portuguese Gothic architecture typical of the 13th–15th centuries, with the new, more flamboyant trends of 15th-century architecture prevailing over the English influence. The monastery was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1983.

I found myself in a small, circular chamber within the buttress. Holding the girl at arm's length in one hand, Number One tore the battling Chinaman from him with the other, and lifting him bodily above his head, hurled him stunned and bleeding against the bole of a giant buttress tree. The tall man leaned heavily upon her to take the weight off his tender foot, while he held his burden betwixt himself and the wall, cuddling it jealously to his side, and thrusting forward his young companion to act as a buttress whenever the pressure of the crowd threatened to bear him away. |
