butene

The alkenes ethene (C2H4), propene (CH3CH=CH2), and butene (C4H8). Alkenes all have the general formula CnH2n.

Any member of the alkene series of hydrocarbons that contains four carbon atoms and one double bond. There are four different isomers described by this formula, which differ in the placement of the double bond and the single bonds. Each isomer can also be described as an unsaturated compound.

Traditional common names for the four compounds are α-butylene, β-butylene, and isobutylene, where the β-butylene represents a pair of isomers (cis and trans). Official IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) nomenclature for these comopounds is: but-1-ene, but-2-ene (cis and trans), and 2-methylpropene.
