byssus

Tough protein fibres secreted by the foot of sessile (fixed) bivalves, such as mussels, as a means of attachment to rocks.

The byssus of some rock creatures can be woven into fabrics. A delicate silk called byssus is made from the byssus of mussels found in the Mediterranean.
