calcium hydrogencarbonate

Substance found in hard water, formed when rainwater passes over limestone rock:

CaCO3 (s) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l) → Ca(HCO3)2 (aq)

When this water is boiled it reforms calcium carbonate, removing the hardness; this type of hardness is therefore known as temporary hardness.
