Listening in on a telephone conversation, without the knowledge of the participants; in the UK and the USA this is a criminal offence if done without a warrant or the consent of the person concerned.

Telephone tapping, or the use of ‘wire taps’, has become an important although controversial tool in the efforts against organized crime, drug trafficking, and foreign intelligence information.
