calyx

The collective term for the sepals of a flower, forming the outermost whorl of the perianth. It surrounds the other flower parts and protects them while in bud. In some flowers, for example, the catchflies Silene of the pink family, the sepals are fused along their sides, forming a sticky tubular calyx.
