Opera by Ottorino Respighi (libretto by C Guastalla, after G Hauptmann's Die versunkene Glocke), composed 1923–27 and first performed in Hamburg, Germany, on 24 November 1928. The story describes how the bell-maker Enrico falls for the elf Rautendelein and deserts his wife. At the news of his wife's suicide he rejects Rautendelein, but dies because he cannot live without her.
