Virologic and bacteriologic investigations on the parenchymatous organs did not detect common canine pathogens, notably canine parvovirus type 2, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 1 and type 2. In the early 1990s, some 1,300 foxes roamed the island, but an outbreak of canine distemper - introduced by an unvaccinated pet dog - sent their numbers plummeting. A great example is canine distemper, which killed lions in the Serengeti, infected seals in Antarctica and black-footed ferrets in the American Southwest. |
