distemper

Any of several infectious diseases of animals characterized by catarrh, cough, and general weakness. Specifically, it refers to a virus disease in young dogs, also found in wild animals, which can now be prevented by vaccination.

Virologic and bacteriologic investigations on the parenchymatous organs did not detect common canine pathogens, notably canine parvovirus type 2, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 1 and type 2.
In the early 1990s, some 1,300 foxes roamed the island, but an outbreak of canine distemper - introduced by an unvaccinated pet dog - sent their numbers plummeting.
A great example is canine distemper, which killed lions in the Serengeti, infected seals in Antarctica and black-footed ferrets in the American Southwest.
