Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the largest city in Africa. Its Arabic name, El Qahira, means ‘victorious’. It is situated on the banks of the Nile, mainly on the eastern side, some 800 km/500 m from the Aswan High Dam and 160 km/100 mi from the Mediterranean.
