OlympiaAncient sanctuary in the western Peloponnese, Greece, with a temple of Zeus, stadium (for foot races, boxing, and wrestling) and hippodrome (for chariot and horse races), where the original Olympic Games, founded 776 BC, were held every four years. The gold and ivory statue of Zeus that stood here, made by Phidias, was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was removed to Constantinople, where it was destroyed in a fire. The face of Zeus may have served as a model for the face of Christ Pantocrator in the dome of St Sophia. Olympia
