carbonation| In earth science, a form of chemical weathering caused by rainwater that has absorbed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and formed a weak carbonic acid. The slightly acidic rainwater is then capable of dissolving certain minerals in rocks. Water can also pick up acids when it passes through soil. This water – enriched with organic acid – is also capable of dissolving rock. Limestone is particularly vulnerable to this form of weathering. |
