cardiac arrest

Sudden failure of the pumping action of the heart. The victim loses consciousness and stops breathing. Without resuscitation, death follows within a few minutes. Most hospitals have cardiac arrest teams, specially trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and capable of an immediate response. If breathing and heartbeat are not restarted within three minutes, the brain is irreversibly damaged.
