caryopsisDry, one-seeded fruit in which the wall of the seed becomes fused to the carpel wall during its development. It is a type of achene, and therefore develops from one ovary and does not split open to release the seed. Caryopses are typical of members of the grass family (Gramineae), including the cereals.
