Cassino

Town in Lazio, southern Italy, 80 km/50 mi northwest of Naples, at the foot of Monte Cassino; population (2001) 32,800. Industries include engineering, printing, food-processing, and papermaking. Cassino was the scene of heavy fighting in 1944 during World War II, as it was a key position blocking the Allied advance to Rome, and most of the town was destroyed. It was rebuilt slightly south of its former site. The abbey on the summit of Monte Cassino, founded by St Benedict in 529, was rebuilt in 1956 to repair the damage caused by Allied bombardment.

There are remains in the vicinity of the Roman town of Casinum.
