cassiterite

Mineral consisting of reddish-brown to black stannic oxide (SnO2), usually found in granite rocks. It is the chief ore of tin. When fresh it has a bright (‘adamantine’) lustre. It was formerly extensively mined in Cornwall, England; today Malaysia is the world's main supplier. Other sources of cassiterite are Africa, Indonesia, and South America.
