Boyarin offers an all-embracing explanation for Freud's controversial switch from the seduction theory to the theory of instinctual infantile sexuality as well as his development of the "phallic" ideas of oedipal conflict, castration anxiety, and penis envy. some portion of her arrogance is, in turn, a consequence of her own compensatory anxiety that she lacks the phallus, then the androgyne is the sight/site of the mutual interplay between narcissism and castration anxiety for both male and female" (172). On closer inspection, however, its status is uncertain: the coiled noodle emerges from an orifice that approximates the location of a vagina, and it culminates not in a proper head but an abrupt cut--raising the question as to whether having a 50-foot penis would mitigate or amplify castration anxiety. |
