Celebration

New town in Osceola County, central Florida; population (1999 est) 2,200. Celebration is a development of the Disney Corporation and is adjacent to the Walt Disney World Resort, south of Orlando. Established in 1994, the first residents arrived in 1996. Its target population is 12,000-15,000. Much attention has been paid to conservation and the town's area of 4,900 acres is buffered by a green belt of 4,700 acres.

The town was designed by Cooper, Robertson, and Partners and Robert A M Stern Architects. Housing is connected by fibre optic networks and reflects six traditional styles of the southeast USA. It is designed to encourage community interaction, with front porches being common. Andrew Ross, author of Celebration (2000), critically compared the experience of life there with that of the women in the notable film The Stepford Wives (1975).
