centromere

Part of the chromosome where there are no genes. Under the microscope,

it usually appears as a constriction in the strand of the chromosome, and is the point at which the spindle fibres are attached during meiosis and mitosis (cell division).

Thereafter, we accomplished the hybridization using protein-nucleic acid probes (provided by DakoCytomation, Glostrup, Denmark) targeted against the centromeric region of the X chromosome (rhodamine-labeled) and the q-arm of the Y chromosome (labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate).
The Nature Methods article describes a whole-genome fractionation technique that can identify centromeric DNA in genomes, and suggests these techniques could be extended to crops and mammals.
Serum antinuclear antibodies specific to Sm, double-stranded DNA, SSM/Ro, SSB/La, histone, RNP, Scl-70, Jo-1, and centromeric antigens were analyzed using Hep-2 nucleus antigens with the BINDAZYME ANA (antinuclear antibody) EIA Kit (The Binding Site, Birmingham, UK).
